Alan George Loftis was born August 9, 1934 to Leonard and Mary (Skinner) Loftis on the family farm in Washington County, Nebraska. He was raised in a family farm environment and had a life long interest in agriculture. His childhood was filled with traditional farm chores and involvements, including 4-H. He graduated from Herman High School in 1950 at the age of 16, then attended the University of Nebraska on scholarship where he was also a member of ROTC and received his degree in Agricultural Economics. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of 2nd Lt. Alan was united in marriage to Frances Mae Jurica on May 29, 1955 in Lincoln, Nebraska; their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Nancy, Sandra and Karen. Alan chose Seward as the residence for his family in 1961 early in his career as a Farm Loan Representative for Travelers Insurance. Following his retirement from Travelers after 28 years of service he established his own business as an appraiser, specializing in agricultural and rural properties and was actively engaged in the industry. Alan's real estate career also included activities as a licensed Real Estate Broker and direct farm management. In the early 1980's, he purchased an 80 acre tract near Milford which he farmed. Alan and Fran are the second owners of the residence at 168 E. Seward Street which he has maintained and renovated many times, always retaining the horse barn in the back corner. Alan was recognized by the the UNL Agricultural Economics/Agri Business Club with the Service to Agriculture Award in 1994 for his long time commitment to their Protege Program. Alan was inducted into the Seward County Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Seward City Council for 20 + years, serving as President for many of those years and was currently serving his sixth year as a member of the Seward Civic Center Commission. Alan's professional memberships included American Society of Farm Manager and Rural Appraisers since 1964, serving as president of the Nebraska Chapter in 1970 and on the Ethics and Peer Review Committees both on the state and national level. Other memberships included: Seward United Methodist Church-- Trustees, Administrative Board and various committees; a Charter Member of the Seward Kiwanis Club serving as president 1975-1976 (awarded Distinguished President), chairman of the Ag Committee for many years, Division Lt. Governor of Nebraska-Iowa District in 1981-82 (awarded Distinguished Lt. Governor) and was awarded the George Hixson Fellow in 1998; Oliver Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. in Seward and Seward Magazine Club. Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Mary Loftis; his brother, Tom Loftis and sister, Barbara Loftis. Alan is survived by his wife, Frances M. Loftis of Seward; daughters and spouses, Nancy L. Loftis of Lincoln, Sandra and Larry Weihs of Wasilla, Alaska, Karen K. Loftis and Eric Johnson of Overland Park, Kansas; one grandchild, Connor Weihs; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen and Carl Launer of Omaha, Ruth and Larry Nelson of Arlington, Betty and Dale Finch of Page, Arizona, brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Janet Loftis of Blair; many cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Alan. |
