Alfred Nicholas Greiner was born January 30, 1924, rural Sholes, Nebraska to Nickolas Michael and Marie Elizabeth (Buthala) Greiner and passed away in Seward, Nebraska on July 23, 2009 at the age of 85 years, 5 months, 24 days. Alfred attended rural grade school and was a 1942 graduate of Sholes High School. On June 20, 1944 he was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Hoeppner at St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph, Nebraska. He entered the U.S. Army in August of 1944 and served until June of 1946 in the 75th Infantry, 897th Artillery in the European Theater and the Battle of the Bulge. After his military service, Alfred returned to Randolph to farm. Alfred and Shirley moved into Randolph in 1977 and Alfred retired from farming in 1986. In March of 2008 they moved to Heartland Park Retirement Community in Seward. Alfred was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church and a life member of the VFW Post in Randolph. He was also a hospice volunteer. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Nickolas and Marie Greiner; his sister, Lorraine Rohloff; brother, Les Greiner; son, Michael Greiner; and three grandchildren, Christine Greiner, David Kudera and Brian Greiner. Alfred is survived by his wife, Shirley Greiner of Seward; his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Greiner of Ewing, Douglas and Betty Greiner of Randolph, Steven and Deb Greiner of St. Joseph, Missouri and Daniel and Cheryll Greiner of Seward; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Randy Kudera of Osmond; sister, Lola Martindale of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Alfred. |
