Arthur John Hoffbauer was born on August 17, 1922, on the family farm southwest of Brainard, NE; to Jacob and Rose (Dobesh) Hoffbauer and passed away on April 24, 2014, at his home at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 7 days. He grew up on the farm and attended country school in the Brainard area. Art enlisted in to the United States Coast Guard on December 7, 1942, , he served on the USS LST #69. It was sunk on May 21, 1944. Art was honorably discharged on March 25, 1946. Art married Virginia Marie Hotovy on June 3, 1947, at Assumption Catholic Church in Dwight, NE. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, Arthur W. Jr., Cheryl, Allen, Deb, Brenda, Bruce, Duane. Art farmed the family place until 1982, he also worked at Goodyear for many years until he retired in 1987. Although he never really retired because he was always busy helping family and friends whenever the need arose. Art and Virginia enjoyed dancing in their younger years and he loved reading the newspaper and keeping up with current events. He served on the East Butler School Board for two terms. He was a life member of the American Legion Rejda Post #273 in Brainard and always helped with Memorial Day events. Art was a member of the United Rubber Union and a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Art was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia on December 22, 2012, daughter, Cheryl Underwood on March 12, 2012, four siblings, Louise Tesina, Adeline Krska, Richard Hoffbauer, Christine Denney. Survivors who will cherish Arthur's memory include his children and their spouses, Arthur W., Jr. and Joan Hoffbauer, Cape Coral, FL, Allen and Karen Hoffbauer, Seward, Deb and Greg Novacek, Seward, Brenda Grgurich, Lincoln, Bruce Hoffbauer, David City, Duane and Shirley Hoffbauer, Valparaiso; 23 grandchildren and spouses, Lori Hoffbauer, Artie Hoffbauer, Jessica and Brian Jorde, Jake Hoffbauer, Mark and Deb Underwood, Matt and Michelle Underwood, Bill and Amanda Underwood, Laura and Steve Peterson, John and Mandy Underwood, Virginia Underwood, Amy and Jon Metschke, Jason and Heidi Hoffbauer, April Hoffbauer, Brad and Martha Novacek, Aaron Novacek, Rachel and Daniel Houston, Sarah and Marshal Pankoke, Janell Grgurich, Nicole Snyder, Joy Grgurich, Kara Hoffbauer, Molly Hoffbauer, Tim Hoffbauer; 21 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by a brother Irving Hoffbauer of Des Moines, IA; and a sister, Marcy Janak of Brainard, NE; to this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Art.
