Barbara M. (Hicks) Crook was born January 19, 1926 in Stella, Nebraska to Robert and Thelma (Young) Hicks and passed away, after a short battle with cancer, in Seward, Nebraska on Friday, April 4, 2008, at the age of 82 years, 2 months, 16 days. In 1938, the family moved to Seward where Barbara graduated from Seward High School in 1943. She worked at Hughes Brothers after graduation, was married to Robert Holtzman of Auburn for a short time, then moved to California, and worked for the Civil Service. She returned to Seward in 1945 and moved to Houston, Texas in 1949 where she lived for 45 years except for 10 years spent in San Antonio. She married E. M. Kirkpatrick, Jr. in 1950, he died in 1969. In 1972, Barbara was married to Jerry Crook and he passed away in 1975. Barbara worked in the insurance industry for 30 years until her early retirement in 1983 due to severe glaucoma. Her last position was with Alexander & Alexander, now AON. She moved to Seward in 1994 and resided at Heartland Park in Seward since 2005. Barbara loved traveling in Mexico, gardening and playing Scrabble and crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Thelma Hicks; step-mother, Evelyn Hicks; husbands, E. M. Kirkpatrick, Jr. and Jerry Crook and her nephew, Brian Gene Hicks. Survivors include her step-daughter and husband, Candace and Touraj Rajobi, two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren, all of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Gene and wife, Phyllis Hicks of Seward, Ron and wife, Cinda Hicks of Lincoln, Bob Hicks of Grand Island and sister, Cheryl and husband, Gary Busch of Arvada, Colorado; nieces, nephews and many friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Barbara. |
