Berdine Henrietta (Bertram) Block was born January 22, 1920 near Staplehurst, Nebraska, the daughter of William Henry, Sr. and Alice Frances (Smith) Bertram and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the age of 88 years, 22 days. After attending country school near Ulysses, Berdine went to live with her aunts Nellie and Eva in Lincoln and attended Everett Junior High and Lincoln High School. She returned to Ulysses and was a 1939 graduate of Ulysses High School. After graduation, Berdine worked in the Lincoln Telephone office, for Kresge's and for Marie Hulbert who had a cooking show on KOLN-TV. She moved to Vancouver, Washington where she met Elvin L. Block. They were married on October 1, 1949 and were the parents of three daughters, Kathleen, Patricia and Carolyn. They lived in Beaver Crossing for a few years and then moved to Ulysses. Berdine served with the U.S. Postal Service in Ulysses from 1959 1985, the last 5 years serving as Postmaster. Berdine moved to Seward in 1988 and had resided in Lincoln since 1995. Berdine enjoyed sewing, crocheting and baking; working with children in the church youth groups and choir and being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H., Sr. and Alice Bertram; her husband, Elvin L. Block; brother, William Bertram, Jr. and sister, Dorothy Mae Dottie Deuel. Berdine is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Dennis Morgan of Blue Springs, Patricia and David Ebke of Columbus and Carolyn Block of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Jerrod Morgan and special friend, Vanessa Sides, Damon and Carrie Morgan, Joshua Ebke and Wynne Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Caden Morgan and Gracie Morgan; other relatives and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Berdine. |
