Bernice Irene Lovig died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at her home, The Greene House, surrounded by her family. She had reached the age of 86 years, 10 months, and 18 days. Bernice was born July 12, 1919 in Adams County, Iowa. The daughter of Ernest and Louise Walter Stillinger, she was the sixth of seven children. Bernice was baptized on February 14, 1938 at the Brooks United Methodist Church and was confirmed on December 26, 1951 at Strand Lutheran Church, rural Villisca. She was raised on a farm near Brooks, Iowa and attended rural school in Adams County. After her family left the farm and moved to Brooks, Bernice became bookkeeper and Assistant Cashier at the Bank of Brooks, a position she held for many years. In 1942, she exercised her independent and adventurous spirit and, with her brother Cliff, ventured to California where she was employed in the business office of the Dunlap Company. At the age of 30, Bernice met her true partner in life and on August 6, 1950, she was united in Christian marriage to Delmar G. Lovig at the United Methodist Church in Brooks, Iowa. After their wedding, Delmar and Bernice moved to their farm in Montgomery County where they farmed side-by-side raising crops and livestock. Their love of the land was evident in their beautiful farmstead and they spent many evenings driving to see about the crops. Bernice and Delmar raised two daughters, Linda Jeanne and Laureen Anne, who were their pride and joy. She maintained the family home and extensive garden and cooked countless meals for family and friends. Bernice and Delmar were also very involved grandparents and made frequent trips to visit their grandchildren. They could often be found cheering from the front row of sporting events in their Grandparent sweatshirts. In addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, Bernice was a former member of Strand Lutheran Church near Villisca. As a member of the Strand Ladies Aid, Bernice spend many hours quilting and organizing church bazaars. After their retirement, Bernice and Delmar rediscovered their love of travel. For 14 years, they, wintered in southern Texas where they enjoyed a lifestyle of leisure. They gained many lasting friendships over games of cards or trips to their favorite restaurants. In 1999, she and Delmar moved to Seward, Nebraska and became members of Faith Lutheran Church where they once again forged many dear friendships. After Delmars passing in 2002, Bernice moved into the Greene House. Here, she often remarked that her days were spent in her rocking chair counting her blessings of faith, her devoted family and friends. Preceding Bernice in death were her husband, Delmar; parents, Ernest and Louise Stillinger; sisters, Esther Murdock and Edna Berry; brothers, Ivan, Fred and Clyde Stillinger and her infant granddaughter. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Rev. Jim Miller of Seward and Laureen and Rudy Kopp of Aurora, Colorado; five grandchildren, Kristina Ursick and her husband Joseph, Merriam, KS, Rachel Miller, Seward, Andrew Miller, Seward, Ross Grimes and his wife Lori, Fort Hood, TX, and John Grimes, Denver, CO; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Brooklyn Grimes, Fort Hood TX. Also surviving her is her brother, Cliff Stillinger, Austin, TX; brother-in-law, Olin Lovig, Villisca, IA; sisters-in-law, Ethelda Stillinger, Brooks, IA and Glenna Spiering, Omaha, NE; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our prayers that Bernice has found her home in Gods loving embrace and has reunited with her loved ones in eternity. We also rejoice and offer our thanksgiving for our lives shared with Bernice. |
