Obituary

Byron Keith Winter was born September 29, 1927 in Clarinda, Iowa to Charles Edward and Martha Margaret (Crain) Winter and passed away on June 21, 2015 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 8 months, 23 days. He was a 1946 graduate of Clarinda High School. Byron proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1946 through 1948 and from 1950 through 1951 in Korea. On June 15, 1952, Byron was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Glenna Joann Taylor in Clarinda, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Cynthia, Bruce, David and Robin. Byron was a graduate of Iowa State University and was a high school teacher for a few years. He then returned to Iowa State University and graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1960. On June 1, 1960, the Winter Family moved to Seward, Nebraska and Dr. Winter opened his veterinary practice. "Doc" was a vital part of the Seward community his entire professional life. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving in nearly every capacity and leadership position. He was a member of the Seward Area Chamber of Commerce, a City of Seward City Council Member for 12 years, served on the School District of Seward Board of Education for 24 years, was a member of the Memorial Health Care System Board of Directors, a founding member of Seward Kiwanis, longtime member of the Seward Magazine Club, a strong supporter of the Seward County 4-H program and was inducted into the Seward County Hall of Agricultural Achievement. Doc enjoyed his time swimming at the Dowding Pool in Seward and during the winter at the Concordia University pool. He participated in the Cornhusker State Games in track and field events numerous years and prided himself on "staying active". His patients and friends, established through his veterinary practice, made up the central part of his life. The time spent with his children and grandchildren was particularly meaningful to him. Doc and Glenna traveled the globe together and each trip brought new friends and memories. Byron is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martha Winter; his wife, Glenna Winter in 1997; his brothers, Douglas Winter, Kenneth Winter and Edward Winter; sister, Esther Hart; two granddaughters, Jackie Winter and Jessica Winter. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia Winter, Seward; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Jeannie Winter, Omaha, David and Stacey Winter, Lincoln, Robin and Melissa Winter, Portland, Oregon; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Guilie, Iowa and Martha Thompson, Colorado; longtime colleague at Winter Veterinary Clinic and friend, Betty Aegerter, Seward and a host of friends made along the way.
