Obituary

Carroll E. Russell, who farmed his whole life in the Lyons, Nebraska, area, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, while in hospice care at the Ridgewood Nursing Home in Seward. He was 96.

Russell farmed soybeans, corn and alfalfa. He also raised cattle and hogs. He was a loyal user of Allis Chalmers tractors and Ford trucks.

Russell served for several years on the Lyons Rural Fire Board.

At home, he enjoyed talking to truckers at night on his CB radio. He went by the handle "Homesteader."

Russell was graduated from Lyons High School in 1945 and played baseball for the Lyons town team.

Russell was born east of Lyons to Ralph and Elsie (Nelsen) Russell in 1927. He married Margaret (White) Russell of Decatur in 1951 in Sioux City, Iowa. They were married for more than 71 years.

Russell is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Seward; sons, Leo Kent Russell of Wisconsin, and James Russell, Lincoln; daughters, Kathy and son-in-law, James Lummus of Ankeny, Iowa, and Diane and son-in-law, David Swartzlander, of Seward; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Merlin Russell; sister, Karen Bedgood.

Graveside service and inurnment will be conducted at a later date.
