Obituary

Charles Linford Sweet was born to Linford and Violet (Deming) Sweet on October 11, 1941, in Stuart, Nebraska and died peacefully in Omaha, Nebraska on June 10, 2024, from pancreatic cancer.  Charles was raised on a Homestead property northwest of Atkinson, NE where he developed his love of the open-prairie and farming.

He attended District 52, a one-room elementary school, and graduated from Atkinson High School in 1959.  He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1963.   Following UNL, he attended medical school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for two years before transferring to the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated in 1967.   He married Judith (Judy) Johnson in 1968 and they made their first home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during his surgical residency.

Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1966, serving as a Lieutenant before being promoted to Lieutenant Commander. He served in the Pacific during the Vietnam war based out of San Diego, California.  In 1970, while in California, they adopted their son Michael.

After leaving the Navy, Charles and family settled in Albion, NE to set up a family practice.  In 1972 they adopted their daughter Kelli.  Charles served the Albion community and surrounding areas for many years as a General Practitioner and emergency room doctor.   He delivered over 600 babies during his medical career.

Charles loved serving others, not just as a doctor, but as a neighbor and a good friend. He readily helped others in need, whether it was for medical care or to repair a neighbor's house. He loved to work and stayed busy into his 80s. Charles was an avid traveler. He would often drive across the Midwest to attend tractor shows and estate sales, and made new friends wherever he went. He loved to tell stories and jokes, and had many of them to share. He retired in Albion, NE in 2023. He was known to many as simply "Doc" and will be missed by his family and everyone in the community and throughout Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Elaine Sweet and nephew, David Ring. He is survived by his ex-wife, Judy Vidito and her husband, Pete; son, Michael; daughter, Kelli and son-in-law, Drew Hallock; cousins, nieces and a nephew.

Charles has elected to donate his body for medical studies at the University of South Dakota and will eventually be inurned in Cleveland Cemetery in Stuart, NE.
