Obituary

Constance E. Atkinson (Connie) was born to Herman and Elinor Marguerite (Krieger) Atkinson in Hawarden, IA; on July 20, 1951 and passed away after a valiant fight with ovarian cancer on October 24, 2013 in Omaha, NE; at the age of 62 years, 3 months and 4 days. She was baptized into the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, IA; on August 5, 1951, by her grandfather, Rev. Henry Krieger and was confirmed at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Spokane, WA; in May of 1965. Connie attended schools at Fairchild Air Force Base Elementary in Spokane, WA; Homer Street Elementary in Springfield, MA; Wettengel Elementary and Anderson Air Force Base Elementary in Guam, Glasgow Air Force Base Elementary and Eastside Elementary in Glasgow, MT; and Glover Junior High in Spokane, WA; before moving to Seward in 1965 where she attended Seward Junior High and graduated from Seward High School in 1969. She attended Kearney State College and received a degree in Journalism with a second major in English in December of 1973. After graduation she worked for the Albion News, Seward Vision 17 Areawide Planning Agency, Graphic Printing and the Seward Country Club before moving to Columbia, MO; where she earned a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science in December of 1977. Connie moved to Rolla, MO; in January 1978, and worked as the Public Service Librarian at the Rolla Free Public Library. In April of 1979, she moved to Kansas City, MO; and worked for a Battered Women's Shelter, as a prison guard, in a travel agency and for a doctor before returning to Rockhurst College to obtain her teaching certificate. Connie began her teaching career at Bishop Hogan high School and joined the Kansas City Missouri Public School System in August of 1986. In August of 1987, she became the library media specialist of the Kansas City Middle School of the Arts where students and staff affectionately referred to her as Conan the Librarian. Her Library Rap was enjoyed by students and staff for over 18 years. During her tenure with the district, Connie earned 68 graduate hours above her Master's from the University of Missouri Kansas City. Connie took disability retirement from the district in August of 2004, and returned to Seward in December 2004 to make her home among family and friends. Connie attended the Seward United Methodist Church and enjoyed Thursday Morning Bible Study, Sunday morning Adult Sunday School and serving as class sponsor for confirmation classes. She loved to read, watch home and garden shows on TV and travel especially enjoying cruises to Alaska and the Mexican Riviera. Connie believed in the 3F's; Faith, Family and Friends. She lived her faith, loved her family and was loyal to her friends. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Elinor Atkinson, her brother, Mike Atkinson and sister, Sue Atkinson Schultz. Connie is survived by her daughter, Yolanda Bradley and Spouse Alex and granddaughter Ava of Alexandria, VA; her loving pets, Pooh Bear Atkinson and Miss Kitty Atkinson of Seward; her brother Gregory F. Atkinson and spouse Dr. Johnna Roberts of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Kathy Atkinson of Omaha and Denise Thomas of Ft. Collins, CO; cousin, Joan Shuck of, Sioux City, IA; grandson, David Crawford and spouse Tracie and great granddaughter Emerson of Arlington, VA; nieces, Stacie Schultz and spouse Rachel Smith of Lincoln; Diane Davis and spouse James of Omaha; Sarah Kimber of Seward; Ashley Shouse and spouse Jeremy of Overland Park, KS; Brianna and Kaitlyn Thomas of Ft. Collins, CO; nephews, David Atkinson and spouse Shannon of Denver, CO; Micah Thomas of Denver, CO: grandnieces, Brynn and Colie Kimber of Seward; aunt, Genevieve Krieger of Manchester, IA; her adopted mother, Betty Menze of Seward; and many friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Connie.
