Darrel Leslie Ahlschwede was born August 27, 1936 at Milford, Nebraska to Oscar E. and Leona Christina (Helmstadter) Ahlschwede and passed away at his home, rural Seward on October 11, 2009 at the age of 73 years, 1 month, 15 days. Darrel was baptized on September 1, 1936 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Ruby and was confirmed on April 2, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran Church Middle Creek. He was a 1954 graduate of Garland High School. He served with the Nebraska National Guard Reserve. On September 16, 1956, Darrel was united in marriage to Ellen Irene Ficke at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Nyla, Kevin, and Lynda. Darrel and Ellen lived all of their married life in the Pleasant Dale and Garland area. Darrel was a farmer, always being interested in soil conservation. He was also employed as a truck driver for Yellow Freight, North American and Apollo. Darrel was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church - Middle Creek. His interests included farming - raising cattle and chickens, traveling - including cruises to Greece, Portugal, Madera, Hawaii and Alaska and they always enjoyed going to Crawford for a special trip after harvest; and he had a special interest in history. Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar E. and Leona C. Ahlschwede and his brother, Larry Ahlschwede. Darrel is survived by his wife, Ellen Ahlschwede of Seward; his children and their spouses, Nyla and David Helge of Lake Barrington, IL, Kevin and Karna Ahlschwede of Seward and Lynda and Ted Hughes of Seward; his grandchildren, Jared and his wife Tesa Helge, Joshua Helge, Jessica Helge, Kelsey Ahlschwede, Kristin Ahlschwede, Theo Hughes, Samantha Hughes; great-granddaughter, Chloe Helge; sister, Ruth Noziska of Grand Island; nieces and nephews and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Darrel. |
