Del Mathis, of Alpine, was called to her Heavenly Home on Saturday, December 31, 2011 in Alpine, TX after a prolonged illness. Del was born in Utica, NE on August 6, 1932 to Henry Daehling and Ella Wieman Daehling. She attended Utica High School, Utica, NE, graduating in May, 1950, as Valedictorian of her class. She was awarded a scholarship to the University of Nebraska by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. She also attended the Lincoln School of Commerce. She married Dale Mathis on October 24, 1956 in Staplehurst, NE. His job with the U.S. Border Patrol moved them to Alpine, TX, in 1967, which is still their home. They were blessed with three children, Diana, Dena, and Derek. Later her four grandchildren brought her great joy. Dena and her husband Guy Clemens of Dallas, TX were blessed with one child, Jaden. Derek and his wife Suzy of Georgetown, TX were blessed with three children, Blake, Blair, and Brylee. She was always a cheerleader at their football, baseball, and soccer games, cheerleading events, and school and church plays. After moving to Alpine, she became a founding partner of Highland Gallery. She was later employed by Sul Ross State University as Records Administrator for 15 years, retiring in December, 1997. She was active in the Girl Scouts, Alpine Woman's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, West of the Pecos Republican Women, and the Red Hat Women's Club. Del was a life-long member of the Lutheran church, being baptized, confirmed, and married at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Staplehurst, Nebraska. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Alpine since moving there. One of her greatest joys was singing in the choir. Those left to cherish her love and memory are her husband Dale Mathis, daughter Diana Mathis of Dallas, TX, daughter Dena Mathis and son-in-law Guy Clemens of Dallas TX, son Derek and daughter-in-law Suzy Mathis of Georgetown, four grandchildren Blake, Blair, and Brylee Mathis of Georgetown, TX, and Jaden Clemens of Dallas, TX, brother and sister-in-law Del and Sherry Daehling of Midland, TX, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ray and Marilyn Mathis of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-law Vivian Naber, of Utica, NE, and a host of much loved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Darrell Daehling of Staplehurst, NE, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Al and Eileen Kennedy of Lincoln, NE, and father-in-law Elmer Mathis and mother-in-law Elsie Brown Mathis of Lincoln, NE. The family will receive friends at a luncheon at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Staplehurst, NE on January 7, 2012 from 12:30-1:30pm. Funeral services and burial officiated by Pastor Allan Harre will follow at 2:00pm. Pallbearers are Blake Mathis, Larry Ruether, Ryan Ruether, Jimmy Soukup, Russell Daehling, and Kevin Daehling. Honorary Pallbearers are David Daehling, Doug Daehling, Danny Daehling, Chip Daehling, and Shawn Carr. Arrangements have been entrusted to Zabka Funeral Home in Seward, NE.
