Obituary

Della Marie Miers was born on January 19, 1938, in Seward to Chester George and Gertrude Dorothy (Ihde) Hans and passed away on May 6, 2017, in Seward at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 17 days.

Della moved with her family to York, Lincoln, and Milford before the family settled back in Seward. She was a 1956 graduate of Seward High School. She married Dick Miers on December 2, 1956, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, to this union three children were born, Katherine, Robert and David. After their marriage Della worked at Vahl Drug Store where she tended the soda fountain, she also did babysitting for a time. Della is most remembered for her love of cooking. She began catering for anniversaries, weddings and Christmas parties which led into cooking for Meals on Wheels for 35 plus years, Seward Rotary which she was awarded the Service Above Self Award and the Paul Harris Fellow award, Seward Mrs. Jaycees, the Mother/Daughter dinners at the Seward United Methodist Church and Freidens United Church of Christ. Della baked all of the apple pies for Seward 4th of July pie eating contest, which she was interviewed by "Good Morning America" television show. Della was very active in volunteering and being active in many clubs in Seward. She was the chairperson for the 4th of July parade, Seward Jaycees, Seward Junior Women's Club, GFCW Seward Women's Club where she served 50 years and was GFCW-NFWC District 4 President. Della was also a member of Seward County Historical Society, Milford Area Historical Society, Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation, American Mothers Association, Doll Club, Busy Hour, and Campfire Girls Leader for many years, 4-H leader and Girls Scout Leader. Della was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church where she served on the LWML, Ladies Aide and taught Sunday school for 50 years, Concordia University Library Campaign, Concordia Guild where she baked cakes for students on their birthdays. In 1986, she received the Seward Community Service Award. Della was also an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Marjorie Junge.

Della is survived by her husband of 60 years Dick, three children and their spouses, Katherine Hartmann and husband Steven, Seward, Robert Miers and wife Sandy, Seward, Dr. David Miers and wife Lanae, Lincoln, 11 grandchildren; Timothy Hartmann and wife Christine, Benjamin Hartmann, Khristina Hindmand and husband Jason, Jesse Heyen and wife Rosalie, Micheal Miers and wife Lexi, Theresa Kelsay, Andrew Alley, Alexis Alley, Aliscia Alley, McKenzie Miers and Maci Miers, 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters; Judy Landenberger and husband Ray, Diller, NE; Linda Ehrlich and husband Roy, Seward; Nancy Johnson, Lincoln, NE; brother; Richard Hans, Seward, brother-in-law, Delbert Junge, Seward.
