Donald Roy Hemphill was born in Utica, Nebraska on August 28, 1920 to Roy J. and Jessie Ellen (Pickering) Hemphill and passed away on June 1, 2008 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 9 months, 4 days. Don was baptized at the Methodist Church in Utica and was a 1938 graduate of Utica High School. After graduation he attended welding school in Omaha and helped his father operate the theater in Utica. He was a member of the National Guard at York and joined the 8th Air Force in 1942 and served as crew chief in the 38th fighter squadron stationed in England during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Seward County. On October 25, 1945, Don was united in marriage to Norma Jean Pierce; their marriage was blessed with four daughters, Kathleen, Julie, Marilyn and Jane. Don and Norma lived in Hastings, Lincoln and Fort Worth, Texas before moving to Seward in 1950. Don was the owner of Hemphill Electric in Seward for 58 years. He was a member of the Utica United Methodist Church, Utica American Legion Post No. 49 and a lifetime member of Seward VFW Post No. 4755.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Jessie Hemphill; his daughter, Julie Hemphill; brothers, Dorwin Hemphill and Dale and his wife, Deloris Hemphill; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucille and Ed Widawski. Don is survived by his wife, Norma Hemphill, Seward; their daughters, Kathleen Craig and Chuck Antell, Harleysville, PA; Marilyn and her husband, Ed Hladky, Seward; Jane and her husband, Ray Kenney, Seward; grandchildren and spouses, Melissa and Chris Perrotto, Marcus and Amy Smith, Sarah Smith, Amy and Gene Gryder, Gail and Shawn Howe, Christopher and Amanda Kenney, Joshua and Sadie Kenney; eight great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Perrotto, Alexandra Perrotto, Jensen Smith, Brock Smith, Nicholas Gryder, Audrey Howe, Grace Howe, Nicole Kenney and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Don.
