Donald Dean Sutherland was born April 18, 1932 in Elm Creek, Nebraska and passed away on August 4, 2011 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 3 months, 16 days. Don was born to Emma Victoria (Larson) and James McCullough Sutherland. He was the ninth of ten children and grew up on a farm north of Elm Creek, Nebraska. Don graduated from Overton High School in 1950 and was a trainman with the railroad until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in October of 1952. He served in Korea until he was honorably discharged in September of 1954. During military service Don earned the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. In 1954, Don married Edna Ruth Hixon and they moved to Slaton, Texas where he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad until 1962. They moved to Elm Creek where they farmed and raised their family. Don was active in the community, coaching baseball and softball. He served on his church board and was president of the Elm Creek school board for several years. Don moved to Lincoln in 1983 where he was employed as the general manager of Darling's Nutrition Company. Don married Nola D. (Nicewarner) Carman on May 21, 1989 and moved to Seward. He retired January 1, 2011. In his spare time, Don enjoyed being with his kids and grandkids.
Don was preceded in death by his son, Mike Sutherland, his parents and seven brothers and sisters. Don is survived by his wife, Nola Sutherland, Seward; his children and their spouses, Sue and Dale Anderson, Burns, WY, Doug Sutherland, Kingman, AZ, Stan and Marilyn Sutherland, Albin, WY, Rondel and Yvonne Carman, Henry, NE, Dan and Heather Carman, Hydro, OK, Darla and Troy Rodenbaugh, Kiowa, CO, Joi and Tony Bishop, Dodge Center, MN; 19 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Delmar and Joyce Sutherland, St. Jospeh, MO, sister, Neva Brindle, Hagerstown, MD and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Don.
