Dorothy Mae Bennett was born on September 29, 1926, to Matthew and Jessie (Osborn) Rine in Braddyville, Iowa and passed away on September 23, 2026, in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 99 years, 11 months and 25 days.
Dorothy attended schools in Braddyville, College Springs and Clarinda, Iowa. She graduated from Clarinda High School with the Class of 1944.
In 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage to Bob Bennett in Hiawatha, Kansas. With their marriage, Dorothy welcomed Bob’s three children, Kenneth, Bonnie and Dickey, whom she lovingly raised as her own. The family later grew with the addition of Peggy and Russell.
Dorothy and Bob lived in Shenandoah, Iowa and Schuyler, Nebraska, before moving to Seward in 1964. Together they owned and operated Bob’s Bakery where Dorothy put her talents to work decorating cakes. They continued operating the bakery until their retirement in 1981.
Following retirement, Dorothy and Bob enjoyed traveling and camping together and spent several winters in California and Arizona. Dorothy was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing, including making clothing for children at the mission for several years. Above all, she treasured time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Dorothy was a longtime member of the Seward United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Church Women United and the Seward Women’s Club.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Jessie Rine; her husband, Bob Bennett; her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and George Jones, and her son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Lucy Bennett.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Monia Bennett of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Dane Glaze; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
