Elaine Margaret (Mar) Hughes was born September 21, 1942 at Pontiac, Michigan, the daughter of Ernst and Elizabeth Martha (Krueger) Mar and passed away on August 21, 2012 at her home near Seward, Nebraska at the age of 69 years, 11 months. Elaine was baptized on October 25, 1942 at Grace Lutheran Church in Pontiac, Michigan and she was confirmed on May 20, 1956 at Trinity Lutheran Church, also in Pontiac. Elaine came from Michigan to Seward to attend Concordia High School and following her graduation in 1960 she went on to attend Concordia College, receiving a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in music. In January of 1962, Elaine was united in marriage to Harley Dean Hughes in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Melissa, Suzann and Timothy. Elaine was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, rural Staplehurst and she served as organist for the church for many years. She was also a member of Blue Valley Quilting Guild. She will be remembered for her love of quilting, as a marvelous cook and especially baking great cookies. She also loved fly fishing and the lakes in Michigan and Minnesota. She enjoyed swimming and taught swimming lessons for years. Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Ernst and Elizabeth Mar; her husband, Harley Hughes in 1971 and a brother, Eric Mar. Survivors who will cherish Elaine's memory include her children and spouses, Melissa and John MacCrimmon, Turner Valley, Alberta Canada, Suzann Hughes, Mexia, Texas, Timothy and Rita Hughes, Staplehurst; grandchildren, Duane and wife Tracey Niedner, John Niedner, Zachary Niedner, Greta Hughes and Olivia Hughes; great-grandson, Kysen Niedner; sisters and brother-in-law, Enid N. and Chuck Muhme, Port Charlotte, Florida, Evelyn and Bo James, Winterhaven, Florida, Elizabeth Mar, Michigan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Marsha Mar, Unionville, Michigan and Tom and Kelly Mar, Garden City, Michigan; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
