Elmer Charlie Smith was born March 28, 1945 in Seward, Nebraska to Herbert R. and Mary Elizabeth (Foster) Smith and passed away at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 16, 2011 at the age of 66 years, 19 days after seven months of a courageous fight with melanoma cancer. Elmer was a 1963 graduate of Seward High School. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Lou Brehe on August 31, 1968 at Agar, South Dakota and their marriage was blessed with two children, Kelly and Holly Jean. Elmer earned Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees from Nebraska Vocational Technical College in Milford, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Concordia University in Seward, and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Elmer served with the Nebraska Air National Guard from 1965 to 1985, retiring as Master Sergeant. His employment includes serving as professor and administrator at Southeast Community College in Milford, with Methodist College of Nursing in Omaha, Concordia University in Seward, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Doane College and as Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sterling, Nebraska. Elmer had a longtime association with Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln; he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sterling and was also a member of Sterling American Legion Post #140.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert R. and Mary E. Smith.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Bonnie Smith of Lincoln; son, Kelly W. Smith of Arapahoe; daughter and son-in-law, Holly Jean and Charlie Senrick of Omaha; grandsons, Christian Eli Smith and Aiden Elmer Smith; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Stephen F. and Linda Smith of Seward, Trevor H. and Marcia Smith of Seward, Sidney W. and Roseanne Smith of Wayland, Michigan; nieces and nephews and their spouses, Steve Smith, Michael Smith and wife Amy, Mary Elizabeth Coons and husband Jeff, Stephen Foster Smith II (Deucer), Hilary Smith, Sarah Smith-Simpson and her husband Ryann, Lisa McKay Smith, Pat Bierman and his wife Lori, Jeff Bierman and his wife Beth, Angie Robinson and her husband Larry, Tyler Bierman, Terri Hedeen, Micky Brehe and his wife Christina, Jenny Brinkmeyer and her husband David; other relatives and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Elmer.
