Erma Francies (Zillig) Flowerday was born on August 28, 1912, the second of seven children born to William and Nellie Maude (Francies) Zillig. Erma passed away in Seward, Nebraska on February 24, 2010 at the age of 97 years, 5 months, 27 days. Erma attended rural schools, including Leahy School. She graduated from the 8th grade, the second highest in Seward County. In 1930, she graduated from Seward High School and attended the University of Nebraska in preparation for teaching in rural schools for five years. On June 2, 1935, Erma was united in marriage to Theodore Milton Flowerday at her parent's home, east of Seward. Five children were born to this union, Janice, Marilyn Judith, Maureen and Theodore. The couple farmed in Seward County, moving to their farm southeast of Seward in 1947 and they moved into Seward in 1960. Erma worked for Seward Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1972. She was a 50 + - year member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Seward where she held offices in the women's groups, including president. She was a 4-H leader and volunteered in the community until age 95. She enjoyed the world travels with Ted after their retirement. Erma was a writer, a published poet and an avid quilter who provided quilts for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Erma is preceded in death by her husband Ted in 2001; her daughter, Janice M. Preston; granddaughter, Barbara Preston; parents, William and Nellie Zillig; her infant brother, Clifford; brothers, Mervin Zillig and Rev. Leo Zillig; her sisters, Leona Westerhoff, Mabel Lyon, and Dorothy Flowerday. Erma is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Martha Flowerday of Madison, MS; her daughters and sons-in-law, Mitzi and Bill Colyer of McClure, IL, Judy and Gene Nagel of Michigamme, MI, Maureen and Larry Dunn of Powell, TN; son-in-law, Duane Preston of Seward; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Myrna Zillig and Joyce Zillig, both of Seward; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends including Connie Kasl of Staplehurst. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Erma. |
