Ernest J. Rieger was born December 22, 1910 to Christian Jacob and Lauisa K. (Spahr) Rieger on a farm in K precinct, Seward County, Nebraska and was baptized January 11, 1911 in the Salem Methodist Church. Ernest passed away on May 3, 2009 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 98 years, 4 months, 12 days. He lived in the Goehner-Tamora area until 12 years of age, moved to the family farm in L Township and finished grade school at District #42. He married H. Esther Rurup February 11, 1932 in Belleville, Kansas. To this union three children were born: Ernestine, Faye and Richard. They lived on the family farm until moving to Seward in 1984. Ernie was a farmer for more than a half century, stating "that was all that he knew what to do". However, he was also a self-taught carpenter, helping his father and brother construct their home on the farm. When married, he moved, remodeled and added on to the home. Ernie, Esther and family lived on the family farm and constructed other farm buildings. In retirement years, he built scale model homes and machinery from wood and later made scale model buildings from matt board while residing at Heartland Independent Living. He was very precise in his work. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Lauisa Rieger; his wife of 66 years, H. Esther Rieger; his brother and sister-in-law, Carl H. and Vivian Rieger and great-great-granddaughter, Catherine Rita Nord. Ernie is survived by his three children, Ernestine and Kenneth Von Bargen of Lincoln, Faye and Maynard Petersen of York and Richard and LaDean Rieger of Utica; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandsons and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Ernie. |
