Obituary
Her early years were on a farm east of York, Nebraska. In 1936 her family moved to Anselmo, Nebraska where she graduated from high school in 1941. She taught in the rural schools of Custer County, NE. She married Floyd Wayne Carpenter in 1944 and settled in Broken Bow, Nebraska. To this union, three children were born. Fern worked at various jobs including Becton-Dickinson for 18 years. In 1978, Fern and Floyd moved to Lamar, Colorado where they owned a Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store. Later they moved to Hereford, Texas where their daughter Patricia Stephens passed away. Fern's husband Floyd and son Floyd Jr. also passed away during this time. Fern remained in Texas until 1996 when she moved to Seward, NE to be near her remaining daughter and family. She married Clarence Schmidt in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd Carpenter Sr.; son, Floyd Carpenter Jr.; daughter, Patricia Stephens; second husband, Clarence Schmidt; sisters, Florence Ritchie, Edna Blakeman, Bertha Wooters; brother, Wade Ernest VanOstrand, step-son Wallace Schmidt.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Terry Miller of Seward, NE; grandchildren: Merry Carpenter of Maryland, Sara (Moses) Horner of Fort Collins, CO, Christopher (Debra) Stephens of Amarillo, TX, Daniel (Tracy) Miller of rural Malvern, IA, Lori (Mark) Merritt of Grand Island, NE and by 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by step children Roger and Nancy Schmidt of Greensboro, NC, and Susan Schmidt of St. Paul, MN.
