Obituary
Evelyn Mae Viets Fougeron was born August 23, 1928 in Seward, NE and passed away unexpectedly, Sept. 11, 2018 at 90 years of age. She was the oldest daughter of Elmer and Hilda (Ficken) Viets and lived her entire life in Seward County. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended District 45 School, Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School, Pleasant Dale High School, and Lincoln School of Commerce. She married Gene Fougeron Dec. 3, 1948 and they began their life of almost 70 years together on the farm near Pleasant Dale raising their children, Margie, Ken, Donna and Steve. They survived several tornadoes, the worst being the 1957 tornado, that demolished all the buildings except their home. They enjoyed many vacations to visit family and friends, including New Zealand, Italy, England and Germany and spent winters in Harlingen, TX for 19 years.
She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran church, Pleasant Dale, and held many offices in the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School. She was a member and officer of the Peppy Dames Extension Club. Evelyn served as a Seward County and Nebraska State Fair judge for 4-H sewing projects for many years and was on the Webermeier Scholarship committee for Milford Public Schools for several years.
Evelyn made dreams come true for her family, and many brides and other young ladies, sewing their wedding and prom dresses, often creating her own patterns. Her sewing machine was always ready for repairs, shortening hems, or adjusting a dress, often at the last minute. Evelyn grew up playing cards, doing puzzles and other games, especially Scrabble, with her family. She shared that passion with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never met a stranger and from her childhood she always wanted to know how they were related to someone.
Evelyn was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald in 1927 and sister, Norma Ficke in 1967.
She is survived by her husband, Gene, and their children and spouses, Margie Fougeron (David Speer) Houston, TX, Ken (Sherry) Fougeron, Lincoln, NE, Donna (Larry) Heyen, Pleasant Dale, NE and Steve (Marcy) Fougeron, Milford, NE and sister and brother-in- law, Carol and Larry Schildt, Pleasant Dale and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Charline and Terry Brown, Harrisburg, NE. She is survived by 9 grandchildren, Mandy Lundstrom, Brooklyn, NY, Melissa (Matt) Bueninck, Houston, TX, Katie (Peter) Welsch, St. Louis Park, MN, Travis Fougeron, Milford, NE, Abbie Edwards, Lincoln, NE, Lindsey (Matt) Sample, Pleasant Dale, NE, Tosha Fougeron (Dave Dunham), Crete, NE, Tiffany Fougeron (Ryan Meints), West Des Moines, IA and Taylor (Brandel) Hauder, Pleasant Dale, NE. She was blessed with 20 great grandchildren, Ellie and Oliver Bueninck, Lydia and Simon Welsch, Soleil and Sloane Edwards, Addison and Easton Sample, Hailey England, Jill, Hannah, Nick and Emily Fougeron, Brenden and Aubreanna Miller, Kameren and Gabriella Neihardt, Lilliann Dunham, and Jake and Luke Hauder.
Additional survivors include multiple nieces, nephews and cousins and the Ron and Caroline Jeppeson family who farmed with them for over 35 years. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Evelyn.
