Evelyn Margaret (Novak) Nemec was born February 3, 1934 on the family farm Northwest of Dwight, Nebraska to Joseph E. & Della (Sypal) Novak and passed away in Lincoln on October 30, 2008 at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 27 days. Evelyn was baptized and confirmed at Assumption Catholic Church.
She was a 1951 graduate of Dwight Assumption High School, where she was active in CYO, Church Choir, Chorus, Band, Pep Club and volleyball. Evelyn married Cyril Cy Nemec on January 8, 1957 at Assumption Catholic Church in Dwight. They moved to Washington D.C. for a short time where Cy was employed as a civilian cook at the Officers Club, a job which he held two years while he was in the Army. Evelyn organized the Assumptionettes 4-H Club and later the Plum Creek 4-H Club. She was a leader for over 40 years. After returning to Nebraska, Cy and Evelyn lived in the Dwight area and two years near Prague returning to Dwight in 1960. They opened Cy's Cafe April 16, 1961, celebrating 47 years in business this spring. She organized paper routes for all her children. She was very active in the Assumption Home and School Association. Evelyn was also very active in the Altar Society, serving as officer and group chairman many times. She also organized senior Bingo for the parish on the first Tuesday of every month and did so for over 20 years. Evelyn was on the Dwight Assumption Parish Centennial Committee and a member of the Dwight American Legion Auxiliary for 26 years serving as president twenty of those years. She was the first lady school bus driver in the area, driving first for East Bulter and then drove a school bus for Aquinas from 1971-1986. She was an Avon dealer for 44 years and sold Watkins products for 18 years. Evelyn was a very active member of the Dwight Community Club serving as President several years as well as other offices. She helped put together the Dwight Centennial Book. She was also on the Dwight Centennial Planning Committee and served on the organizing committee for Assumption All-School Reunions over the years. Evelyn enjoyed writing Dwight news for the Banner Press and Southern Nebraska Register and was a former Dwight news correspondent for the Seward Independent. Evelyn's hobbies included making cakes for many different occasions and celebrations and decorating altar flowers, corsages, etc. for her children's weddings, besides a few others' weddings. She provided meals to shut-ins over the years, often sitting with the elderly to keep them company while they ate. She provided meals and food to people who otherwise would have been alone on a holiday and to people who had nowhere else to turn for food. She was a great cook and taught her children well. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family and was always inventing new reasons to get together.
