Ferne (Heckman) Snowden Runner was born August 16, 1920 in Esmond, South Dakota to John Henry Heckman, Sr. and Katherine (Engel) Heckman and passed away on February 5, 2010 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 5 months, 20 days. She attended school in Esmond. On July 30, 1940, Ferne was united in marriage to Harley Deremer Snowden and they lived most of their married life in Utica, Nebraska. Ferne cooked and cleaned houses following threshing crews. She was a cook at the Utica Schools, worked for many years as a clerk in the Variety Store in Utica and did babysitting in the Utica area. Ferne was a member of the Utica United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 199 and American Legion Auxiliary and was a Girl Scout Brownie Leader. In March of 1990, Harley and Ferne moved to Hallam, Nebraska. Harley died in 1998 and Ferne continued to make her home in Hallam. On January 20, 2001, Ferne was united in marriage to Elmer Ray Runner in Hallam. Ferne continued to be active working at a restaurant and serving on the Election Board in Hallam for many years; she also did babysitting during this time. Ferne is preceded in death by her husband, Harley D. "Tootie" Snowden; her parents, Katherine and John Heckman; her brothers, Herschel, Floyd, Stanley, Marvin, LeRoy and John "Bud" Heckman. Ferne is survived by her husband, Elmer Runner of Hallam; her daughters and sons-in-law, Deanna and Roger Brackhan of Fremont, Laurie and Gary Vocasek of Hallam; grandchildren, Angela and Robert Kutz, Michael and Nicolette Brackhan, Ryan Brackhan, David Brackhan, Stacey and Ryan Birkett, Nicole Ripa; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas, and Joseph Kutz, Ava and Jack Brackhan; sisters, Florence Ruttencutter of Long Beach, CA and Delores Crawley of Novato, CA; sisters-in-law, Bev Heckman, Elsie Heckman, Louise Heckman, Leona Stockland, Gwen Vrbka; brother-in-law, Walter Grisham; extended family, Bob and Heidi Fahrnbruch, Tyler and Morgan and a host of friends.
