Obituary

Fred Frank Hromas was born on February 8, 1926 near Bee, Nebraska to Fred A. and Christina (Nemec) Hromas and passed away in Omaha, Nebraska on June 24, 2015 at the age of 89 years, 4 months, 16 days. He suffered a major heart attack on October 13, 1991. His damaged heart finally gave out. Fred attended rural grade school and then Garland High School. In high school he played basketball and ran track. He graduated in 1944. After graduation he worked in Lincoln. One of his first jobs was shoveling coal for 20 cents a ton which a railroad car was 40 tons. It would take him two days to empty the car and he earned $8.00. He volunteered for the Army Air Force and served until the end of WW II with an honorable discharge when he was twenty years old in 1946. He was united in marriage to Georgia Ann Hurt on June 1, 1948 at Assumption Catholic Church in Dwight. To this marriage two daughters were born, Noreen Ann and Karen Marie. Fred was a "Nebraska Farmer" who loved farming for over 60 years from 1948 until his retirement at the age of 82. Fred used the GI bill for veterans and learned a great deal about farm management. He farmed by Garland, Marietta and in 1952 moved to Ulysses. He farmed from 320 to 800 acres where he grew corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa. He was proud of farming dry land, but really liked irrigating. He also had milking cows, feeder steers and market hogs. In 1967, Fred and Georgia bought their own farm just north of the Ulysses water tower. They made their home there for over 40 years until they moved to Omaha in 2008 for health reasons. The couple enjoyed their farm life and farm animals, especially Pam his Palomino Horse, and Fred loved his John Deere tractors. After their move to Omaha, they enjoyed their neighbors and learning new skills on their computer. In his leisure time he enjoyed Czech music and dancing. He especially enjoyed polka dancing with his wife and friends on Sunday afternoon for many years at Starlight and Plamor Ballrooms. Fred and Georgia traveled to many Polka Festivals from Texas to Minnesota, dancing almost every dance from early Friday to late on Sunday. He said he learned to polka dance because his aunts taught him at a very young age. Fred and Georgia really loved the polka hop. After moving to Omaha, he enjoyed listening to polka music on Sundays and the Molly B Polka Show. He also enjoyed the Devaney coached Nebraska Cornhuskers and NU and Creighton Basketball teams. Fred loved the country farm life, he loved farming from sun u to sun down. With his John Deere tractors he singly farmed all 800 acres. Fred as a De Kalb seed dealers for 26 years. He ranked in the top sales producers for many years, earning awards and trips to Hawaii and Jamaica. Fred was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish in Ulysses for over 50 years. He was active as an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1717 and a Fourth Degree Chalice Club member. He was also a member of the Ulysses Co-op and on the Ulysses Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed the annual Firemans' Stag Dinner and Card Party. Fred also was very active with his girls. He was a 4-H leader of the Blue Valley 4-H Club and a member of the Butler County Fair Board. He helped the girls show dairy and beef cattle at the Butler County Fair and Fremont Fair. He also was a fan at their softball games and of their 4-H baking. Fred enjoyed cards of all kinds. He first learned to play pinochle with his grandpa when he was eight. He played pitch, poker, hearts and spades and especially liked to play with his brother, brothers-in-law and nephews. Later in life, he enjoyed playing with his sons-in-law and grandsons. He also played many card games on his computer in his 80's. Fred loved visiting with friends and family and enjoyed many laughs with them. It was important to him to celebrate birthdays with his family. He would visit his sisters and brothers on their birthday every year. He loved to take car trips, especially to see his uncles in Oregon. He also enjoyed car trips to Seattle, WA, Los Angeles, CA, Phoenix , AZ, New York City, Washington D.C., Orlando, FL and the Colorado Rockies. He was a friend to many and will be dearly missed by all whose lived were touched by him. Fred is survived by his wife Georgia A. Of Omaha and their two daughters, Noreen and her husband Marty Meysenburg, Omaha and Karen Kozisek (Tom-deceased) and special friend Louis Juergesen , Omaha; his six grandchildren: Kristy and John VI Proos of St. Joseph, MI, Jason and Joanna Meysenburg, Justin and Siobhan Kozisek, Jay and Stacy Kozisek, Joel and Kelly Kozisek, all of Omaha and Jonathan Kozisek and friend Serenity of Denver, CO and his 11 great-grandchildren: Elena, Jack and Nora Proos, Noah, Samuel and Benjamin Meysenburg, Tyler and Ruari Kozisek, Veronica and Vincent Kozisek and Lucille Kozisek. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Evelyn Hromas of Phoenix, AZ; brothers-in-law Dennis and Joanna Hurt of Nelson and John and Ann Hurt of Sidney; seven nieces; seven nephews and numerous friends. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred A. and Christina A. (Nemec) Hromas; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice and John Morford and Christina and Ralph Walker; his brothers and sister-in-law, Clifford and Joyce Hromas and Don Hromas. Others who also went before him were his father and mother-in-law, Louis C. and Agnes (Houdek) Hurt; his son-in-law, Thomas J. Kozisek; brother -in-law, Louis N. Hurt, "Junior" and four infants., Theresa Ann (June 23, 1958), Agnes Ann (June 30, 1959) Christina Ann (Sept. 13, 1961) and Fredrick Joseph (Feb. 19, 1963).
