Gene was raised in the Palmyra area until 1953, when the family moved to Seward. He attended Seward High School. He then worked at Husker Pop factory for several years until 1965, when he began his career working at Hughes Brothers. During his time at Hughes Brothers Gene did a little bit of everything. He then began working at Super Wash and has been employed there the past four years.

On December 21, 1978, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Shaw in Seward, NE. Gene helped his brothers at auctions and especially enjoyed going to the Lincoln Livestock Auction. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and enjoyed taking them fishing and horseback riding. Gene had a love for animals; he had horses, dogs and even a pet raccoon.
