Gertrude Marguerite Ann (Polak) Hakel was born March 22, 1917 on a farm in Lancaster County, Nebraska to John J. and Emma (Lorence) Polak and passed away in Seward, Nebraska on August 18, 2008 at the age of 91 years, 4 months, 27 days. Gertrude attended District No. 21 in Lancaster County and was a 1934 graduate of Valparaiso High School where she was Valedictorian of her class. On October 16, 1935, Gertrude was united in marriage to Rudolph Joseph Hakel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Agnew, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Kenneth, Lorraine, Elaine and Charleen. They farmed east of Valparaiso and southwest of Ceresco before moving to Seward in 1949. Gertrude and Rudolph co-owned the Seward Sale Barn from 1949 1957, Gertrude ran the lunch room and was the bookkeeper. Later she was the laundry supervisor at Seward Hospital for many years prior to her retirement. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, playing board games with her children and grandchildren, sewing, and baking. Gertrude was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, Altar Society and was an honorary member of P.C.C.W. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, John J. and Emma Polak; her husband, Rudoph Hakel in 1999; sons-in-law, Charles Jirovsky and Roger Rosche; her brothers, Cyril Polak and John Polak; 7 half brothers and sisters and twin great grandsons. Surviving to cherish her memory are Gertrude's children and spouses, Ken and Pat Hakel of Seward, Lorraine Jirovsky of Seward, Elaine Kodad of Lincoln, Char and Bruce Ebner of Columbus; 12 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Gertrude. |
