Gilbert George Gregory Novacek was born October 31, 1927 in Touhy, Nebraska to Charles Anton and Florence Catherine (Kadlecek) Novacek and passed away on October 5, 2007 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 11 months, 5 days. Gilbert was a 1946 graduate of Dwight Assumption High School and attended St. Procopius/Benedictine College of Lisle, Illinois for two years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and after his discharge from the service he attended Lincoln School of Commerce. Gilbert worked as an accountant in Lincoln, Holdrege and Omaha prior to moving back to Dwight in 1964 to reside with his father. He worked in shipping and assembly at Hughes Brothers Manufacturing in Seward from 1965 until his retirement in 1992. Gilbert was a member of Dwight Assumption Catholic Church and a member of the choir; other memberships include VFW Post No. 4755 in Seward, a life member of the Dwight American Legion Post No. 110 where he served as adjutant for 17 years. He was a member and former officer of the Dwight Volunteer Fire Department, a lifelong member and current vice-president of the Catholic Workmen/FCSLA organization. Gilbert enjoyed traveling and was an avid fan of Nebraska football and basketball and other sports. He was a loyal supporter and volunteer worker for East Butler high school sports and Dwight American Legion Baseball. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. and Florence C. Novacek and his nephew, Jeffrey Novacek. Gilbert is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Chuck and Mary Lou Novacek of Omaha and Jerome and Doreen Novacek of Dwight and his sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Julius Hotovy of Dwight; six nephews, two nieces and their families and a host of friends.
