Harold "Charlie" Allan Thorell was born in Holdrege, NE; on January 1, 1938, to Earl Arvin and Lenore Evangeline (Anderson) Thorell and passed away on August 6, 2015 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 7 months, 5 days. Charlie grew up in the Loomis area where he attended Loomis High School, graduating with the class of 1955. He then attended Kearney State College where he played football and ran track. Charlie graduated in 1960. On May 22, 1959, Charlie married Vera Irene Yost in Grand Island, Nebraska. They moved to Sumner, Nebraska and in the fall of 1960, Charlie began his teaching and coaching career. Charlie and Vera moved to Seward in 1964, where Charlie began teaching Industrial Arts and Physical Education. Charlie coached football and track and started the cross country and intramural basketball programs. He refereed for many years, including five state basketball tournaments. Charlie was later inducted into the University of Nebraska Kearney Hall of Fame, lettering in track and football all four years. The family started Thorell Detasseling which they ran for several years before merging with the Sloup family. He loved watching his children and grandchildren in their activities and also enjoyed working as an event staff member for many of Nebraska's sporting events. Charlie was a long time member of the Seward Recreation Board and the Hillcrest Evangelical Free Church where he drove the bus (The Son Shine Line). Charlie is survived by his wife Vera Thorell of Seward; three children and their spouses, Shelly Smetter and husband Sam of Seward, Shane Thorell and wife Rhoda of Aurora, Trent Thorell and wife Pam of Memphis, TN, daughter-in-law, Olivia Thorell of Glendale, AZ; 14 grandchildren, Chelse Smetter, Zack Smetter, Zoie (Logan ) Thune, Grace Smetter, Trina (Lucas) Harger, Trevor Thorell, Sarah Thorell, Teagan Thorell, Traeten Thorell, Tatum Thorell, Ben Thorell, Emily Thorell, Katie Thorell and Josh Thorell; three siblings, Stuart Thorell, Gloria Mitchell and husband Harry, Dennis Thorell and wife Nancy; sisters-in-law, Karen Thorell, Pam Miller and husband Ron; brother-in-law, Bill Stroh and wife Holly; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Travis Thorell on May 5, 2010, brother Jim Thorell and sister-in-law Robin Thorell.
