IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry E.
Hoffman
January 22, 1923 – August 8, 2016
Harry E. Hoffman, 93 of Seward passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 8, 2016 at Ridgewood where he had been a resident for the past two months. He underwent triple by-pass surgery on Valentine's Day in 2001 and faithfully participated in cardiac rehab three times a week to keep his heart strong and healthy.
Harry was born on January 22, 1923 to Edward and Rose (Zavodny) Hoffman. He was a graduate of Seward High in 1941. His nickname "Harry the Horse" stemmed from his basketball playing days in high school and stuck with him his entire life. Harry was united in marriage to Geraldine Noxon on October 8, 1949 at the First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska. Harry worked for many years as a rural mail carrier and he enjoyed all the patrons he served on his rural route. Upon retirement he became a full time husband and father nurturing a home that was always filled with love, laughter and kindness. Harry was a World War II Veteran and a charter member of VFW Post #4755 in Seward. He was proud to have served in the Army Air Force and was extremely patriotic. A special memory of the family was July 4, 2015 where he was honored as a Grand Marshall in the July 4th parade in Seward. Harry was also an avid Cornhusker fan and loved watching the Big Red games with his family.
During his years, Harry was actively involved as a Mason with Oliver Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M., Seward and the Presbyterian Church where he was a member for over 56 years; currently Harry was a member of Living Word Lutheran Church, Seward. He enjoyed playing cribbage frequently with his Civic Center buddies. Harry's greatest love was being with his family, playing pinochle and eating delicious home cooked meals. He lived for the frequent visits from his children and was a dedicated husband and father, lovingly referred to as the "Head Squirrel" by his children. This is evidenced by the large wood squirrel sculpture that resides in his front yard.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Rose Hoffman; loving wife, Geraldine, in 2010, who he had been married to for over 60 years; four brothers: Earl, Melvin, Norman, and John and two sisters, Irene and Joan.
Survivors include his three daughters, Susan Mahoney and husband Michael, Brighton, CO, Sandy Odean and husband Greg, Dallas, TX, Holly Kennedy and husband Dan, Bettendorf, IA, one son Harry "Buzz" Hoffman and wife Jennifer, Seward; two sisters-in-law, Mary Noxon, Seward, and Reva Noxon, CA; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Please join the family as we honor Harry's exemplary life. Visitation will be held Thursday at the Living Word Lutheran Church from 1 to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 12th at the Living Word Lutheran Church, Seward, with interment at the Seward Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Living Word Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be forwarded to the family for future designation to Harry's favorite charities. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Zabka Funeral Home, Seward. Condolences may be sent at
