Helen Fredericka Eberspacher, 100, of Milford, formerly of Seward, died on Friday, June 25, 2010 in Milford, Nebraska. Helen was born on December 22, 1909 on a farm southwest of Seward, Nebraska to Gottlob and Anna (Aufrecht) Eberspacher, one of seven children. As a child, Helen actively helped with farm chores, like milking cows, and would recall cutting through the pasture to attend Star (Country) School, District 58. She was a graduate of Milford High School in 1928. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1932 with a degree in education and in 1933 with a business degree. After graduating, teaching jobs were scarce. She had a few years without available employment due to the hard times experienced by the country, but then taught in elementary education for five years in rural schools in Seward County, six years in Crete and nineteen years at Beattie Elementary in Lincoln. She enjoyed the excitement of a school (Beattie) still under new construction. Helen retired in 1973 always remembering her students with affection. Her advice to children was simply "be good". After retirement in 1973, Helen moved back to her family's farmstead and helped in the care of her mother who lived to be 101. Helen enjoyed traveling with her sister, Louise to many different places of interest and was grateful to have seen her father's home and where his family farmed in Germany. She loved reading and many times had to be called to come downstairs to dinner. She missed this when her eyesight failed in her later years. After her move to the city of Seward, she enjoyed taking long walks. Exercising was an important part of her day. Helen belonged to Kappa Phi Sorority and was a member of the Goehner Grange. In 1920, Helen became a member of the Salem United Methodist Church. She felt part of her Christian "duty" was helping support various Mission projects here and in other parts of the world. She also enjoyed knitting layette items for an Indian Mission and baking pies, especially at Thanksgiving time, for the City Mission. She was always thankful for her Christian heritage and was a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews. For two years Helen lived at Crestview Care Center in Milford and appreciated the care and concern she received from each care provider. Helen is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; four sisters, Della Ernst, Esther Beave, Louise Eberspacher and Ruth Miller; and one nephew, Dave Eberspacher. Helen is survived by one sister-in-law, Rosalyn Eberspacher of Mesa, Arizona; nine nieces and nephews and many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews, and her good friend, Ione Gabel. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Helen. |
