Helen L. (Thonen) McGrew was born October 28, 1928 in Hiawatha, Kansas to Emil and Martha Emma Elizabeth (Duesing) Thonen and passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on December 15, 2009 at the age of 81 years, 1 month, 18 days. Helen was baptized on November 11, 1928 in Hiawatha. She was the youngest of 12 children. The family moved to Seward County in 1930 and Helen attended the Goehner School. She later attended St. John Lutheran School and she was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church on April 18, 1943. Helen was a 1947 graduate of Seward High School. Helen was united in marriage to Donald Clarke McGrew on September 4, 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. She was a beauty operator at Hillcrest Beauty Shop, located at their home. She was the co-owner of McGrew Insurance Agency and later owned Helen McGrew Real Estate Company. She retired in 2004 and sold her Real Estate Agency. Helen was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Seward Area Chamber of Commerce. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Martha Thonen; her husband Donald C. McGrew in 1993; her grandson, Army Specialist, Adam G. Herold; brothers, Albert, David, Frank and Arthur Thonen; sisters, Vera Rocker, Ella Rea, Lillian Hobbs, Clara Junge, Hilda Moore, Lucille Thonen, and Leona Klahn; sister-in-law, Mary Bloom. Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dan C. and Charlene McGrew of O'Neill; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Lance Herold of Omaha; grandchildren, Luke McGrew, Matthew McGrew, Andy and his wife, Carissa Herold, Kyle Herold and girlfriend, Erin Vickers, all of Omaha; great-grandchildren, Catherine and Will Herold; sister-in-law Alice Thonen of York; brother-in-law, Francis Klahn of Lincoln; numerous nieces and nephews; good friend, Jane Jurgens of Seward and a host of friends.
