Herb entered eternal life on Friday, April 17, 2009 to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on December 29, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Emil and Adeline (Noffke) Garske. On January 16, 1921 he was baptized into the Christian faith at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Chicago, and was confirmed into communicant membership on Palm Sunday, 1934. On June 13, 1946, Herb and Evelyn Bahr were united in holy matrimony in Houston, Texas. This union was blessed with three sons: John and his wife Diana, and their children, Andrew, Alissa and Adelle; Randall and his wife, Marlene, and Mark. In addition to his wife Evelyn, also surviving is brother, Carl Garske. Herb was preceded in death by brothers, Martin and Edmund, and sisters, Irma and Elfrieda. Herb attended St. Luke Lutheran Grade School (Chicago), Concordia Lutheran High School and Concordia Lutheran College (River Forest, IL). He held graduate degrees in music from American Conservatory of Music (Chicago), from Northwestern University, and from the University of Michigan. He also studied in Germany and was a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. His entire professional life was spent serving the Lord in the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. First at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Buffalo, NY as Director of Christian Education and Music (1942-1943). Then as grade school teacher, organist and choir director at Trinity Lutheran Church in Houston (1943-1964). And finally from 1964-1986 as Professor of Music and Humanities at Concordia College in Ann Arbor. From 1965-1985 he was organist and choir director at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor. For the past 2 1/2 years he and Evelyn resided in Seward, Nebraska at Heartland Park Independent Retirement Center in their own apartment. They have been members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Staplehurst, Nebraska during these years. For the Synod, he served on the Commission on worship, the Commission on Confirmation, and for several retirement years, as a doctrinal reviewer of worship and educational materials. He was chief organist for the two national conventions of Synod held in Texas: 1953 in Houston and 1977 in Dallas. Throughout his entire career and in "retirement", he played organ recitals and hymn festivals, and led workshops in church music. He was also active in the American Guild of Organists. Part of Herb's Last Will and Testament reads: "I commit myself to God's care, secure in His love for me and trusting in the salvation purchased for me through Christ's suffering, death and resurrection. I leave those who survive me the comfort of knowing that I have died in this faith and have now joined my Lord in eternal glory, and look forward to being reunited with my relatives in that eternal day which will have no end. Therefore, I encourage them to place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone. Amen." |
