Herbert John Folkerts was born April 27, 1927 in David City, Nebraska, the son of John Helmerichs and Lisa Anna (Seidensticker) Folkerts and passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 11 months, 20 days. Herb was baptized June 5, 1927 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Millerton, Nebraska and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Garrison on April 6, 1941. He was a 1944 graduate of David City High School. Herb served in the U.S. Army from December 8, 1948 until his discharge in January of 1961, serving during the Korean War. Herb was united in marriage to Maxine L. Schaefer on June 7, 1952 at Marysville, Kansas. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Ken, Randy, Dennis, Sharon and Mike. The family moved to Garland where he drove a milk truck as well as driving over the road for various trucking firms and was also a painter. In 1982, Herb and Maxine moved to Austin, Texas where he worked at a variety of jobs. They moved back to Seward in 1990. Herb was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward and Dwight American Legion Post #110. Herb was honored to be one of the veterans to go on an honor flight to Washington D.C. to see the Korean Memorial. Most recently, Herb was consumed with helping at the Armory with the new museum. In his younger years his hobbies included playing pool and baseball. Herb is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine in October of 2012; brother and sister-in-law, Werner and Frances Folkerts; granddaughter, Lisa Folkerts and son-in-law, Eugene Wiemer. Survivors cherishing Herb's memory include his children and spouses, Ken and Ellen Folkerts, Decatur, IN, Randy and Lynn Folkerts, Seward, Dennis and Mary Ellen Folkerts, Red Rock, TX, Sharon Wiemer and Tom Schaffran, Seward and Mike Folkerts and Michelle Scanlon, Cedar Creek, TX; nine grandchildren and two step grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild and a host of friends.
