Hilda Rose (Bauer) Hergert was born August 12, 1930 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was the ninth and youngest child of Alexander and Mary Katherine (Walter) Bauer who were German immigrants from Russia. Hilda died July 12, 2008 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 11 months.
Hilda grew up in Havelock where she attended school and graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1948. As a child she sang in church and performed in her high school plays. She was baptized, confirmed and was a member at Zion Congregational Church in the south bottoms on 9th and D Streets. She attended Zion with the love of her life, Samuel Jim James Hergert. On September 29, 1950, they were married and had four daughters, Janis, Nancy, Laurie and Sandy. Hilda was a secretary at Port Huron Machinery and Supply in Lincoln. She later became a bookkeeper and worked at the Ford Dealership in York and at York Manufacturing in Henderson. Until her husband's retirement she did the bookkeeping for their trucking business, Sam Hergert Trucking. Her life's devotion was to her husband and children. While her husband trucked coast-to-coast she took care of their girls. When Jim was home they enjoyed camping and boating at Fremont Lakes and taking the girls to the swimming pool. They enjoyed going to dances, listening to music, and playing cards with friends. Later they moved to Johnson Lake in western Nebraska where they enjoyed boating, fishing and visiting with their family and friends. When Jim retired in 1990 they relocated to Lincoln where Hilda enjoyed working part-time at Bryan/LGH in the food service department. Hilda loved to garden and enjoyed canning the produce that she raised. She also planted flowers yearly and being outside with nature gave her great joy. She also enjoyed sewing and making doll clothes for her children. Later she embroidered tea towels and pillow cases, as well as baby blankets for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Hilda always relied on her faith to get her through the tough times. She was a caregiver for her husband until he passed away in 2001. During this time she developed her own health problems. Even though she had physical limitations she continued to help in the classrooms at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward and enjoyed participating in the Bible studies at Hillcrest Evangelical Free Church.
Hilda moved to Anna Sundermann Homes in March of 2008. Her favorite times were going to the activities and visiting with the many people who helped with her care. Hilda particularly enjoyed the dogs that were brought for companionship.
Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Jim Hergert; her parents, Alex and Mary Bauer; brothers and spouses, Reinhold and Henrietta Bauer, John and Betty Bauer, Harold Bauer, Elmer Bauer; sisters and spouses, Frieda Bauer, Norma Boyer, Marie and Bill Ketterer, Esther and Jack Ketterer.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Samuel and Hazel Hergert. Hilda is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Janis and David Bauer, Lincoln, Nancy and Joe Hammond, Lincoln, Laurie and Jay Hoogland, Genesco, IL, Sandy and Ken Shaw, Seward; grandchildren, Christina Shaw, Brock and Esther Shaw, Brett Shaw, Levi and Rose Lippincott, Luke Lippincott, Jason Hoogland, Matthew Hammond; great-grandchildren, Samuel and Benjamin Lippincott; sisters-in-law and spouses, Jean and Walt Hanson, Colorado Springs, CO, Alice Toots and Ken Wagner, Colorado Springs, CO, Twila Bauer, Fresno, CA; many nieces, nephews and friends.
