James Pershing Hinds was born October 16, 1915 in Odell, Nebraska to Charles Norton and Josie Alma (Walker) Hinds, the last of seven children. He passed away in Seward, Nebraska on August 11, 2005 at the age of 89 years, 9 months, 26 days. James was a 1932 graduate of Table Rock High School; he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1942 and received his Master of Music degree in 1953. On July 16, 1941, James was united in marriage to Erma Belle Harlow in Papillion, Nebraska. This marriage was blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Sondra. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-- 1945 in the Pacific Theater. James was a Music Educator his entire life; his first teaching position was in 1934 with Bunker Hill, a country school near Table Rock, followed by serving as marching band and concert band instructor in Table Rock, Humboldt, Hebron, Adams, Papillion, Valley and Arapahoe. He retired in 1979. James moved to Seward in August of 1995 from Arapahoe. James was a member of the United Methodist Church in Seward, Table Rock Masonic Lodge No. 108, A.F. & A.M., member of Order of Eastern Star, a member of American Legion and Lions Club at Arapahoe. His special interests were music, playing the clarinet and enjoying time with his family. James was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Josie, his wife, Erma, and six brothers and sisters, Clarence Hinds, Lulu Hiatt, Hazel Bowden, Charles Hinds, William Hinds and Edwin Hinds. James is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl and George Frederick, Lincoln, Sondra Southard, Seward; grandchildren, Charles Frederick, Andy Frederick, Sara and Eric Vachon, Nick Southard and Megan Southard, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. We add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with James. |
