James W, Paye, 94, Utica, died Monday (6/4/07) in Utica. He was born Sept. 17, 1912 in Des Moines, IA, and lived most of his life in Des Moines. A graduate of East High School in Des Moines, Jim graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA in the Division of Industrial Sciences, chemical technology, in 1933. He worked for 40 years at Meredith Publishing and Printing Co., first as a chemist, then as a manager and finally as a researcher. For nine of those years, he also worked full time for contractor L.J. (Jim) Rothfus.

A hard worker, Jim will always be remembered for his generosity , his way of surprising loved ones with special gifts--especially at Christmas, his love of words and his penchant for numbers and math games. He was a long-time member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Castle Dance Club, a neighbor bridge club, Esquire Toastmasters' Club and the Des Moines Club of Printing House Craftsmen.
