James D. Wondra

James Dale Wondra was born on January 17, 1939, in Seward, Nebraska, to George L. and Audrey I. (Fiery) Wondra. He passed away on July 24, 2026, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 7 days.

James grew up on the family farm near Staplehurst, where he attended country school before graduating from Seward High School with the Class of 1956. Following graduation, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps Reserve, faithfully serving his country until receiving his honorable discharge in 1960.

On June 17, 1961, James was united in marriage to Lucille J. Urbanek at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ulysses, Nebraska. Together they were blessed with two sons, Dan and Bob, and shared many wonderful years together.

Following their marriage, James worked for Dave Tuma Construction for several years before joining American Stores in Lincoln. After the store closed, he began working in the maintenance department at Seward Middle School in 1980. He remained with the School District of Seward until his retirement in 2004.

James enjoyed spending time outdoors and had a lifelong love of fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting. He was a former member of the Staplehurst Volunteer Fire Department and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He also had a soft spot for animals and never turned away a stray cat that found its way to the farm.

Above all, James treasured his family. His grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life, and some of his happiest moments were those spent with them. His greatest accomplishment was the love he shared with his family, and he will be remembered for his quiet kindness, unwavering dedication, and the lasting legacy of love he leaves behind.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille; his parents, George and Audrey Wondra; and his brother, David Wondra.

Survivors cherishing his memory include his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Wondra of Columbus; his sons, Daniel Wondra of Papillion and Robert (Christine) Wondra of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandchildren, Lauren (Kelby) Radney of Bellevue, Erik Wondra of Pacific Junction, Iowa, Lauren Wilson of Bellevue, Reid (Sydney) Wondra of Fort Bliss, Texas, and Dominic Wilson of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Sawyer Radney, Maddox Radney, and Parker Radney; cousin, Tom Guzzetta of Omaha; along with other relatives and friends who will deeply miss him.
