JoAnn C. Ricenbaw Austin was born in Seward, Nebraska on April 21, 1928 and passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on November 1, 2005 at the age of 77 years, 6 months, 10 days. JoAnn was the third child of Joseph and Emma (Zillig) Ricenbaw. She lived on the family farm until she graduated from Seward High School in 1945. She then attended Lincoln General Hospital Nurses Training. Upon graduation, JoAnn worked at Lincoln General Hospital for several months and then in the Civil Service at Kearney AFB and Offutt AFB. JoAnn moved to Seward and became the private nurse for Mrs. Paul Rolfsmeier. She met Robert Austin who was employed with Rolfsmeier Farm. On February 11, 1951, JoAnn was united in marriage to Robert Edward Austin. At that time Robert was in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Vance AFB, Enid, OK. Following his discharge they moved back to Seward. They were the parents of five sons, Steven, Charles, Douglas, James and Daniel. JoAnn worked part-time as a nurse on the evening shift at Seward Hospital for many years; she served as a school nurse at Concordia College (now University) in Seward and in 1967, she started back to work at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln as a night nurse until her retirement in 1990. Robert passed away in 1991 and JoAnn remained in Seward until 2001 when she moved into Legacy Terrace Assisted Living in Lincoln. JoAnn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Seward.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Emma Ricenbaw, her husband, Robert Austin, brother, Lester Ricenbaw and sister, Ruth Gade.

JoAnn is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Danette Austin, North Platte, Charles Austin and Heather Allen, Seattle, WA, Douglas Austin, Redlands, CA, James and Juli Austin, Lincoln, Daniel and Dorian Austin, Boone, IA; nine grandchildren, Kelli, Kyle, Tashington, Brogan, Chandler, Amara, Chase, Mason and Marshall Austin and a host of friends.
