John Karl William Fehlhafer was born September 22, 1919, the sixth child of Charles and Ida (Moeller) Fehlhafer. John was born on the farm in Seward County, Gresham, Nebraska. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed on May 28, 1933, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Gresham. John attended school at District 36 until seventh grade when he attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School, rural Gresham. John met his wife, Florence Lillian Knorr when they were in the upper elementary grades and they were married on November 15, 1939 at the Knorr family farm home. John and Florence had four children, all girls, Janice, Joyce, Lola and Nancy. They farmed in York and Seward counties all their life. John also did carpentry work, working for Busch Lumber and he worked at Houchin Bindery for many years, first on the line repairing books and later in maintenance. John retired from the farm in 1987 when he and Florence moved to their home in Utica. John enjoyed woodworking in his shop and built furniture. He also sharpened knives and scissors for friends in the area. John is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica. He sang in the church choir from the time he was in the eighth grade until he was in his late 80's. He also served on various church committees and offices. John enjoyed attending family gatherings, reunions, birthday parties and playing cards. John passed away on November 16, 2014, in Utica, Nebraska at the age of 95 years, 1 month, 25 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ida Fehlhafer; daughter, Lola Tonniges; brothers, Otto and Herman Fehlhafer; sisters, Marie Schmidt, Dora Rucksdaeschel, Frieda Knorr; grandson, Rodney Tonniges; granddaughter-in-law, Nancy Sheehan. John is survived by his wife, Florence Fehlhafer, Utica; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Larry Moore, Ulysses, Joyce and Al Sheehan, Seward, Nancy and Gail Wolfe, North Platte; grandchildren and spouses, Kathy and Bart Dye, Alliance, John and Angie Moore, Shelby, Todd and Holly Tonniges, York, Susan Tonniges, York, Lori and Bill Batt, Utica, Toni and Tom Fletcher, Lincoln, Todd and Joanne Sheehan, Canyon Lake, TX, Ted Sheehan, Lincoln, Patrick and Kim Sheehan, Gresham, Dawn and Manny Caudillo, North Platte, Kristen and Roger Wilton, Gresham; 32 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and wife, Clarence and Shirley Knorr, York, sisters-in-law, Erna Staehr, Seward, Donna Belle Knorr, Pleasant Hill, MO; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
