Obituary

John Gerald Polivka, 82 of Valparaiso was born in Brainard, NE March 7, 1935 to John and Frances (Bohac) Polivka. He married the love of his life, Evelyn D. Hromas on May 26, 1958. John was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with everyone including his dogs, Ivy and Sherlock. He passed peacefully at home on January 7, 2018, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

John spent time in the United States Air Force, Army and Nebraska Army National Guard. He worked at Reimers Kaufman, owned his own concrete businesses, E & J Contracting and Polivka & Sons, farmed most of his life and was a longtime employee until retirement at National Crane.

John loved his family and spending time in the country on his farm. He enjoyed putting around on the tractor, going for drives, listening to Polka music, going to auctions, watching westerns, The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune.

John is survived by his sons, Johnny (Becky) Polivka, Jerry (Lisa) Polivka, Jamey (Tina) Polivka; daughters, Lori (Edward) Matulka, Tammy (Dan) Vasa, Melanie (Jeremy) Jordan,  Dorie (Chris) Dickey; 25 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; siblings, Ernest (Bernice) Polivka, Adeline Lempka, Barbara (Ray) Benes; sisters-in-law, MaryAnn Polivka, Marcella (Robert) Allen, Bonnie (Don) Schwartz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; parents, John and Frances Polivka; brother, Theodore Polivka; in-laws, Frank and Mary Hromas; brother-in-law, Ambrose Lempka, and granddaughter, Shylee Anne Polivka. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with John.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary to follow at Sts. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church, Valparaiso. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Sts. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church, Valparaiso, NE; with Father Matthew Zimmer celebrating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Bee, NE. Memorials may be made to the Polivka family for future designations.
