Kent Gordon Christensen was born May 7, 1957 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Vance and Betty (Cyboron) Christensen. He grew up in Boelus, Nebraska and was a 1975 graduate of Centura High School.
Kent joined the Navy immediately following his graduation. He went to boot camp in San Diego, trained in Tennessee, and was stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines. He worked on P-3 Orion planes that were too large to land on a ship, so he was always shore based. HoriSun Hospice had a pinning ceremony recently honoring Kent as one of the Silent Heroes of the Cold War.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1979, he took a job with Cablevision in Lincoln for a few months until he accepted a job at Centel where he worked until 1994. He met his wife, Denise Schulze, while working there. They were married on June 8, 1985 at Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. The couple lived in Lincoln the first two years of marriage until they moved south of Garland in June of 1987. After Centel, Kent worked for various companies including Lincoln Telephone, Metromail, and 3Com. He also did some consulting work. In January of 2005, he took a job with the University of Nebraska working with their computer networks. He stayed with UNL until his retirement in April 2018 due to health reasons.
Church was a very important part of Kent's life. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Malcolm for several years until he and Denise joined a launch team in 2008 to start a new church in northwest Lincoln called Word of Life Lutheran Church. He was an Elder in the church, created the screen presentation for the service, played guitar in the Joyful Noise Praise Band, and faithfully attended a men's small group Bible study that met each Wednesday morning. One of Kent and Denise's favorite prayers was a simple one, "Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and his mercy endures forever!".
Kent liked to fish and enjoyed trips with his grandfather, dad, and uncle to fish the refuge lakes up by Valentine. Whenever Denise commented that it was a beautiful day, Kent would always follow with, "should be fishing". He had a passion for music learning to play the guitar while in the Navy. In recent years, he joined the Nebraska group of NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) that meet once a month. He loved songwriting, always jotting down song lyric ideas, and could spend hours working on a song not realizing how much time had passed. Kent had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He had a gentle, giving heart and was loved by many.
Kent was preceded in death by his grandparents.
