Lawrence William Beckler was born December 11, 1922 to William Wesley and Anna (Roth) Beckler on a farm southwest of Milford. When he was seven years old, his family moved to a farm north of Beaver Crossing. Lawrence attended District 53 north of Beaver Crossing and Beaver Crossing High School. He left school in 10th grade to help his dad with the farm.
On March 14, 1944, he was married to Della Pearl Reeb of Martland, Nebraska. The couple lived their first year of marriage east of Goehner on what had been his grandfather Henry Roths place and then moved north of Beaver Crossing and farmed on Langworthy property for four years. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Richard and Larry.
Lawrence brought his family to Milford in the fall of 1949 and became the International Harvester Dealer. He moved Becklers Implement Company to Seward on September 1, 1956, buying the dealership from Bob Mercer which was located on the north side of West Highway 34 along the dike. The family began life in Seward in one of the Harold Davisson houses on Davisson Drive. In 1965, the company moved directly across the highway to the south where it was located until 1985 when it closed down. In 1978, Lawrence had a heart attack and was given at most, five years to live. He was unable to work and began to winter in Florida and then Arizona. Eventually, his health improved and he was able to get involved in business ventures once again. He was instrumental in moving the Et-Cetera Shop to its present location which was then the vacant Seward Dry Goods building. He provided the land for the first Habitat for Humanity house built in Seward. He purchased two other buildings to the west of the courthouse in order to keep businesses around the square.
Della passed away in November of 1991 and in 1992, Lawrence married Lillian (Stutzman) Eicher of Milford in a cabin graciously offered by Wayne Tanderup. They enjoyed spending summers in Nebraska and winters in Sun City, Arizona. Lillian was co-manager of the Et-Cetera Shop in Seward and Lawrence joined the board soon after. Lawrence led the way in getting an elevator installed in the shop large enough to move goods and furniture to the basement and to the second floor.
He especially enjoyed traveling, golfing, 2:30 coffee with his buddies in Seward and time with his extended family.
Lawrence was a charter member of Bellwood Mennonite Church in Milford and attended Trinity Mennonite Church in Glendale, Arizona. He was a member of Rotary International, the Seward Country Club, Seward County Historical Society, Seward Area Chamber of Commerce, Mennonite Economic and Development Association and he served on the Seward City Council and Southeast Community College Board of Governors.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Beckler; his wife, Della Beckler; brother and sister-in-law, Orie and Alice Beckler; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Wallace Stauffer.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Lillian (Stutzman) Beckler of Seward; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Ruth Beckler of Lincoln, Larry and Teri Beckler of Pasadena, CA; grandchildren, Kris Beckler of Fort Collins, CO, Stephanie Anderson of Roseville, CA, Noah, Hannah and Sarah Beckler of Pasadena, CA; great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Garrett Anderson and their father, Doug Anderson of Roseville, CA.
