Leland Arthur Imig was born February 1, 1935 in Ogallala, Nebraska to Arthur Fred and Ida Katherine (Grafel) Imig and passed away at his home in Seward, Nebraska on February 24, 2010, at the age of 75 years, 23 days. Lee started school in Tamora, Nebraska and was a 1952 graduate of Lincoln Northeast High School in Lincoln, NE. After several years of road construction work around Nebraska and two years serving in the U.S. Army, he studied at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and earned a BS in Civil Engineering in 1962. He started his career as an engineer at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. Concurrently, he enrolled at Virginia Tech and earned a Masters degree in Engineering Mechanics. He earned several US patents during this period. On July 3, 1964, Lee was united in marriage to Susan Kay Backstrom in Lincoln. They lived in Newport News, VA, and Northport, NY, and the family returned to Nebraska in 1978 to farm with his cousin, Harold Keller, raising grain sorghum, wheat, soybeans, corn and asparagus. Lee and Harold together built the Imig home in Goehner. Lee retired from farming in 1996, after also serving on the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board and as a US Feed Grains Council Ambassador. Too restless for retirement, he began training to become a financial advisor. After obtaining his license, he began a third career working for Waddell & Reed, which lasted for 11 years. Through the years his hobbies included woodworking, cribbage, crosswords, bridge, golf and UNL sports. Lee and Sue enjoyed hosting international visitors through the years. Lee was a wry truth-teller and skeptic, and he never failed to see the small delights all around.
Lee was a longtime member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Goehner and currently a member of Seward United Methodist Church. Other memberships include, Goehner Volunteer Fire Department, Goehner Village Board, Goehner Centennial Players, Seward Kiwanis, Magazine Club, Beaver Crossing American Legion Post #178, and Friendship Force - Lincoln.
Lee is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ida Imig and his brothers-in-law, Norman Creeth and Milton Jacobson.
Lee is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan Imig of Seward; son, Greg and his wife, Holli of Suwanee, GA; daughter, Nancy Imig of Denver, CO; grandsons, Andrew and Wesley Imig; sisters, Darlene Schild and her husband, Wayne of Austin, TX, Eileen Creeth of Mt. Vernon, WA, Ardis Jacobson of Longmont, CO; brother Alton Imig and his wife, Elizabeth of Lincoln; many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Lee.
