Leo David Zillig was born on the family farm between Seward and Garland, Nebraska on July 21, 1926, the youngest of six children born to William and Nellie (Francies) Zillig. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Seward High School in 1943.
He served two years in the military service during the last year of World War II, and the occupation of Japan following it; he spent 17 months of this time in the Philippines and Japan. After receiving his military discharge, he returned to the family farm which he farmed for the next sixteen years.
On June 25, 1950, he married Joyce E. Meyer of Staplehurst. To this union three children were born.
Leo and Joyce were both active members of Friedens United Church of Christ prior to their marriage and their faith grew through their life together. In September of 1962, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Leo was enrolled in Eden Theological Seminary, and the family lived in housing on the campus. He graduated from Eden Seminary in 1965, and was then ordained as a Christian minister in his home church in Seward.
Leo served in full time Christian ministry for 28 years and two months, serving four parishes, all in Nebraska, during that time. Those Nebraska parishes were in Arlington, Tecumseh, Plainview and Brunswick and Franklin and Riverton.
In 1993, Leo and Joyce purchased a home in Seward for retirement living and from which Leo would commute to do part-time ministry until he chose to fully retire. Leo did serve St. John's United Church of Christ in Western for seven years and also West Blue United Church of Christ after his retirement doing mostly Sunday worship services while commuting from Seward.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nellie Maude (Francies) Zillig; an infant brother; sisters, Leona and husband Carl Westerhoff, Dorothy and husband Ray Flowerday; brothers-in-law, Charles Lyon and Ted Flowerday and niece Janice Preston.
Leo is survived by his wife, Joyce Zillig of Seward; son, Paul and wife Janet Zillig, grandsons Taylor and Adam, granddaughter, Jamie all of Lincoln; daughter, Linda Zillig of Mason City, IA; and daughter, Marcia and husband Henry Miller, granddaughter, Megan, grandson, Dakota, all of Crofton; sisters, Erma Flowerday and Mabel Lyon both of Seward; brother, Mervin and wife Myrna Zillig of Seward; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Leo.
