Obituary

Leonard Leroy Sisel was born on February 27, 1931, in Loma, Nebraska to John and Mary (Divis) Sisel and passed away on July 20, 2018, in Lincoln at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 23 days. Leonard grew up in the Loma area and attended Dwight Public School.

On August 15, 1951, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corp. He was sent to Korea, where he was a machine gunner in the front lines with Dog Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, for a year. On July 18, 1952, enemy artillery wounded three Marines, including Leonard. He received the Korean Service medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. Leonard was honorably discharged on August 14, 1954. On December 28, 1954, he was united in marriage to Edith C. Hotovy at Assumption Catholic Church in Dwight. The couple lived in Lincoln for four years. He worked for Bud Irons Construction where he was a heavy equipment operator including digging the basement for the governor's mansion. In 1958, Leonard and Edith began their farming operation and Leonard also sold NC+ seed corn until 2006. He also worked at Hughes Brothers for five years. Leonard coached Dwight Legion Baseball for 10 years. He loved Husker football, deer hunting, squirrels and the great outdoors. He was a lifelong member of Assumption Catholic Church and a member of Dwight American Legion Post #110 for 64 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Sisel; two brothers, Louis and Ray; three sisters, Elsie Stava, Gladys Jakub and Irene Vrbka.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith; four children and their spouses, Susie Kotera and husband Al, Lincoln, Shari Havlovic and husband Greg, Brainard, Steve Sisel and wife Susan, Dwight and Scott Sisel and wife Angie, Bee; seven grandchildren, Casey Kotera and wife Kristin, Matthew Kotera and wife Chelsea, Shane Sisel and wife Heather, Shelby Schomerus and husband Kyle, Kylee Chapek and husband Brandon, Evan Sisel and Katie Sisel; three great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Arlene Stastny; sister-in-law, Connie Hotovy and brother-in-law, Jim Vrbka.
