Lorraine Marie (Walla) Hottovy was born January 28, 1929 to Sylvester Anton and Theresa Ann (Benes) Walla and was raised on a farm near Valparaiso, Nebraska. She attended a country grade school and then Dwight Assumption Catholic High School, graduating in 1946. She lived at the school since it was a distance from her home. Lorraine was employed by a grocery store after high school. She met her future husband at a local dance. She was married when she was 19 years old to Charles Daniel Hottovy at St. Vitus Catholic Church in Touhy on February 9, 1948. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary together before Charles died in 2007. Four children were born to this union: Duane, Bonita, Joyce and Charles, Jr. Being a devoted farmer's wife and mother of four was a large part of Lorraine's life. In 1960, Lorraine and Charles decided to have someone build a new home for them. She told her family of fond memories of watching the house being built. Her interest in family history, raising chickens, doing the daily newspaper crossword puzzles, cooking, baking, canning and freezing from her vegetable garden kept her very busy. She did find time to teach her daughters how to cook and to embroider tea towels. Her family and friends liked to sample her Czech style of baking, especially the kolaches and apple strudel. Lorraine was an active member of the Dwight Assumption Catholic Church and their Altar Society and Catholic Workman. She also looked forward to helping plan her high school class reunion each year for many years. Trips to visit relatives in Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado and Washington DC were always a special treat for her. In later years she served as an election judge at the local elections. Being around people and helping them were things she thoroughly enjoyed. That job and her volunteering at church activities were a good fit for her personality. One of her favorite sayings was the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She was unselfish and was always grateful for all the blessings that God gave her. Lorraine passed away on February 20, 2011 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 82 years, 23 days. Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Theresa Walla; her husband, Charles D. "Chuck" Hottovy; sister-in-law, Susan Walla; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Adolph and Emma Hottovy, Lucille and Francis Eiting, Agnes Fiala, Marcella Hottovy, Reynold and Dorothy Hottovy, Richard Hottovy and Leonard Klein. Lorraine is survived by her children and their spouses, Duane Hottovy of Dwight, Bonita and Robert Knievel of Frederick, MD, Joyce and David Policky of Lincoln and Charles Hottovy, Jr. of Dwight; seven grandchildren, Rachelle and Mark Schofield, Erica Knievel, Steven Knievel, Michaela and Kevin Fay, Jeffrey and Richelle Policky, Kyle Policky and Eric Policky; her brother, Reynold Walla of Valparaiso; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Emil Hottovy of David City, Raymond Hottovy of Morris, MN, Rose Klein of David City, Raymond Fiala of Wahoo, Rose Hottovy of David City and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Lorraine. |
