Loyd L. Young was born on July 31, 1931, rural Cortland, Nebraska the son of James Edwin Young and F. Ethel (Burcham) Young and died on June 13, 2015 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 83 years,10 months, 13 days. Loyd was a graduate of Cortland High School. Loyd served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1949 to 1973. On April 8, 1952, Loyd was united in marriage to Darlene Rae Etmund in Hickman, Nebraska and their marriage was blessed with four children, Margo, Renée, Nancy and Paul. Loyd received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1952, his Master of Science in 1967 and his Ph.D in Adult Education in 1972, all from the University of Nebraska. The family moved to Seward in 1952, where Loyd began his professional career in Cooperative Extension Service in Seward County. Later, Loyd was appointed as director of the Southeast Research and Extension Center (SREC) of Nebraska. After his retirement, Loyd remained active as a lobbyist for the Nebraska Association of Cooperative Extension Boards. Loyd's memberships were many and varied and include: Block and Bridle Club-NU, Epsilon Sigma Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Nebraska Ag Relations Council, Nebraska Agribusiness Club, National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees, OPEDA (Organization of Professional Employees of the Department of Agriculture), Seward County 4-H Foundation, Nebraska 4-H Foundation, University of Nebraska Foundation, UNL Emeritus Assoc., Nebraska and National County Agents' Assoc., Seward Area Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Lincoln and First Presbyterian Church of Seward. Loyd was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement and the Seward County Hall of Agricultural Achievement. Loyd is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Darlene Young in 2005, his son, Paul Young in 2012; his brother Floyd Young and sister, Leota Monia. Survivors cherishing Loyd's memory include his daughters, Margo Young and husband, Richard A. DeFusco, Lincoln, Dr. Renée Young and husband, Mark Olson, Omaha and Nancy Gwelo, Lincoln; grandchildren, Jennifer Gwelo, Patrick Olson (Katie Gorga), Sean Olson, Rachel DeFusco and Rebekah DeFusco; great-grandchildren, Quincy Ewoldt, Cameron Tucker II, and Perseus Tucker and a host of friends.
