Lyle C. Dunker was born on April 17, 1923, near Surprise, Nebraska to Conrad J. and Eunice A. (Ludden) Dunker and passed away on May 11, 2024, in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 101 years and 24 days.
Lyle grew up on the family farm. He attended and graduated from Ulysses High School with the Class of 1940. He farmed with his father until he was drafted into the United States Army on June 28, 1944. While he was on leave, Lyle returned to Nebraska where he was united in marriage to Helen Pollock on December 11, 1944, in Seward. To this union three children were born, Sharon, Kenneth, and Keith. Lyle served in southern Italy in the 110th Mountain Division Signal Corps. He was awarded the Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct medal, EAMET Ribbon, and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on April 19, 1946. Lyle returned to Ulysses to his wife and began farming again with his dad. He also did custom corn shelling and well drilling in the Ulysses area. Lyle served on the Ulysses Rural Fire Department for 28 years, holding every position in the department. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Upon retiring from farming, the couple moved to Seward in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen (2017); three sisters and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.
Survivors cherishing Lyle's memory include his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon (John) Holck, Fremont, NE; twin sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth (Kathy) Dunker, Columbus, NE, Keith (Diane) Dunker, Rising City, NE; three grandchildren, Rachelle Holck, Mike (Shirley) Holck, Bradley (Kayla) Dunker; two step-grandchildren, Christine (Dan) Foy, Robert Oppliger; four great-grandchildren, Kenedi and Tyler Holck, Tanner and Karleigh Dunker; five step-great-grandchildren, Dawson, Ellie, Miley and Zoe Weeks, Michael Foy; two sisters, Dorothy Prazak, Lincoln, Marilyn Clark, Johnson, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
