Obituary

Funeral services for Margaret E. Sommerfeld, 83, of Seward, formerly of Norfolk, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 12, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Reverend Ray Wilke will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery and visitations will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Home for Funerals. Mrs. Sommerfeld died Monday, September 9, 2013, in Seward. Margaret Emma Sommerfeld was given life by her creator and was born on February 18, 1930, in Norfolk, Nebraska, the child of Alfred O. Korn and Emma I. (Tietdke) Korn. On March 5, 1930 she received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. On May 27, 1945 she publicly confessed her faith and was confirmed in the Lutheran Christian faith and began to also receive the precious gift of forgiveness in the Lord's Supper. She lived in Norfolk throughout most of her life. She graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in May of 1948. She completed a two-year training course at the former Norfolk Junior College in 1950 and taught in the Stanton Public Schools from 1950 to 1952. On July 2, 1951 she was joined in marriage to LeRoy Richard Sommerfeld of Norfolk. They were blessed with the gift of five children, Russell, Elaine, Priscilla, Peggy and Scott. God blessed Margaret's life with many special people as she served the Lord as wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, piano teacher, church organist, choir director, and choir accompanist. God gave her an enduring love for His gift of music. She had precious memories of playing for some well-known choir directors. She was thankful for the many opportunities God gave her to serve congregations, pastors and choirs. Accompanying the Lutheran High School Northeast Choir of Norfolk brought her special delight. She loved to make music to the Lord and lead His people in worshipping Him with music. She imparted this love for music to her immediate and extended family. She and her husband were blessed by membership and the ministry at each Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church and Grace Lutheran Church of Norfolk over their years. In her last years God granted her a membership and ministry at St. John's Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska. Margaret enjoyed God's great outdoors through gardening and fishing with her husband. She also enjoyed making a home for her family and took pleasure in the two homes that she assisted her husband to build. While residing at the Ridgewood Rehabilitation and Care Center of Seward, Nebraska, after a lengthy illness, Margaret was granted a peaceful death as the Lord took her home to rest in the arms of Jesus Christ to await the resurrection of the dead. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy, her parents Alfred and Emma Korn, two sisters Flora Rowland and Louise Wehrer and a brother Allen Korn. Those remaining to cherish her memory, mourn her death and celebrate her eternal life in Jesus are her children Rev. Russell and Donna Sommerfeld of Seward, NE; Elaine and Jay O'Leary of San Antonio, TX; Priscilla and Leslie Warren of Tekamah, NE; Peggy and Scott Caauwe of Norfolk, NE; Scott and Stacey Sommerfeld of Norfolk, NE; one sister Dorothy Korn of Pierce, NE; a sister-in-law Reba Sommerfeld of Norfolk, NE; grandchildren Alex and Monica Sommerfeld of Seward, NE; Nicholas Sommerfeld of Kearney, NE; Victoria and Jason Ruskamp of Gibbon, NE; Paul Chalk of Houston, TX; Collin Warren of Plattsmouth, NE; Angela and Joe Douglas of Tekamah, NE; Paige King of Tekamah, NE; Ethan Warren of Lincoln, NE; Eric and Larissa Caauwe of Page, NE; Nathaniel Caauwe of Norfolk, NE; Jeffrey Caauwe of Norfolk, NE; Zachary and Amber Sommerfeld, Justin Sommerfeld, Halley and Courtney Sommerfeld all of Norfolk, NE; and seven great grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many fellow Christians and community friends.
